XRWD Newsletter 9 June 2020

On Saturday 30th May, Extinction Rebellion  Warwick District rebels met at midday to stand outside Shire Hall In Warwick asking the Government for a Citizens Assembly to decide our future together during the Covid-19 recovery, a recovery that must prioritise people and planet over profit. The protest took place in silence , at social distance ,with banners making points such as “people OR profit”, “life OR death”, “new roads OR new bike lanes” “Wind power or Fossel Fuels “etc.

Warwickshire County Council’s woeful inaction in producing a strategy and action plan to deal with climate change was highlighted. We intend to plan future similar actions in the lock down. It shows that we can do actions responsibly even in the lock down and I personally found it very inspiring.

It was noticeable that alot of the rebels who turned up were those that have been coming to the group zoom meetings, so well done to Ali and Felicity for having these regularly in the lock down. If we are to grow then we need new rebels, Derrick helped to recruit 10 new possible members on the day.

Stand up for Change

Stand up for ChangeWednesday 24th June 2020
6.00 pm - 7.00 pm
Outside the Town Hall in Leamington

Taking every care to ensure we maintain Social Distancing, we are planning to exercise and make our presence known before the County Council full meetings to demonstrate our dissatisfaction with the current inadequate response to the climate and ecological emergency.

We would like our local representatives to know that we expect far more from them.

We are determined to comply with the COVID-19 Government advice and at the moment we are able to do so this action will go ahead. If you attend please ensure you follow our directions and exercise (walk or gently jog) well spaced out.

The more the merrier so bring friends, relatives, strangers ... everyone is welcome so long as they follow social distancing rules.

Reclaim the Streets

Reclaim the StreetsSunday 28th June 2020
11.00 am meet at The bandstand, Leamington

Part of a national campaign which is encouraging cyclists and pedestrians to take to the streets as part of the wider "No Going Back" message. This peaceful and "socially distant" action will provide a strong message that the town centre streets around the world are for all to enjoy , and residents would like the recent reduction in traffic use and improvement in air quality to continue post-Covid19.

We will cycle an easy two mile route around Leamington Spa town centre, you are free to cycle the route as many times as you wish. Please bring hi-viz and flags if you have them.
