Exreme weather events have already plagued 2025 in its first month, from the LA wildfires which have killed many and destroyed homes of many more, to Storm Éowyn in the UK.
XR Warwick District was on the streets of Leamington on Saturday 25 talking to citizens about these events, using a survey board, and putting into practice outreach training provided by XR Midlands the night before.
Outreach Training Friday 24 Jan
Aptly enough, the training was delayed due to storm disruption to trainlines, but when David from XR Midlands arrived he provided a fascinating and practical session on talking to the public, which five of us joined at the Attic, Smith Street in Leamington.
Extreme Weather Outreach at Howden Insurance Saturday 25 Jan
The next morning David joined us at Howden Insurance in Leamington. Firstly, Howden staff were given an opportunity to be Climate Heroes, and influence Howden to be the next insurance firm to stop insuring new fossil fuel projects. We know that internal pressure from staff who realise the hypocrisy of their firms' sustainability policies can make all the difference, from existing successes with Zurich and Probitas.
Then we set up a survey board, asking passers-bys how concerned they were by extreme weather events, see photo below. We had some great conversations, including with a sustainability academic.
